Peel and Stick Wallpaper
TOOLS YOU’LL NEED
— Sharp utility knife or X-Acto knife
— Pencil
— Level (or laser level)
— Measuring tape
— Ruler or straight edge
— Plastic wallpaper smoother (felt edge recommended)
PREPARE THE SURFACE
Inspect walls for any imperfections or textured areas to determine if a sanding is necessary. If the walls have unstable paint, are textured or uneven, then sanding is advised. Make sure all dust or residue has been wiped off before proceeding. If the walls have cracks, flaking or unstable paint, it is highly recommended to prime first. Use a primer sealer of your choice and follow manufacturer instructions. Primer promotes proper wallpaper adhesion and allows for easy removal. After priming, wait 1 week to cure before beginning the installation. Freshly painted walls must cure 3–4 weeks prior to installation.
Professional installation is recommended. Two people make installation significantly easier. Handle product with care. Do not use tape on image surfaces. Be sure to avoid creasing or sharp folds at any point or this will damage the print. Please read instructions before beginning installation.
MEASURE & PLAN
All designs are pre-matched for straight or half-drop repeats. Allow 2–3" extra at both ceiling and baseboard for trimming. You will trim the excess off later. Before installing:
- Identify Panel 1
- Confirm the panel order (ex: 1-2-1-2 or 1-2-3-4 repeat)
- Dry-lay panels on the floor to understand pattern flow
INSTALLATION
1. For best results, hang your first panel (Panel 1) in an inconspicuous corner. Pick a corner and lightly mark a line 8" over; this will be your starting line for your first panel. Do not start directly in the corner. Walls and corners are rarely perfectly square, and this can cause seam issues later. Use a level to ensure the line is drawn straight.
2. Unroll your first wallpaper panel with the pattern-side down and adhesive-side up. Fold back and crease the adhesive liner about 6-8” away from the top to reveal the adhesive. Ensure you have enough of the backing peeled away to secure the wallpaper onto the wall.
3. Hold the wallpaper a few inches away from the wall with the pattern-side facing you. Use your hands to make the initial contact on the wall, ensuring the edge of the wallpaper is aligned along the drawn guideline. Adhere the first 6” to the wall. Once the wallpaper is adhered to the wall at the ceiling line, check for any wrinkles or bubbles. Smooth out any air bubbles with a wallpaper smoother (not a squeegee). If needed, gently peel and firmly reapply wallpaper to reposition or release any air bubbles.
4. As you work your way down the wall, make sure the wallpaper panel follows the guideline. Continue to peel the liner down 6-8” at a time. Hold the panel a few inches away from the wall, and repeat the process of adhering it with a wallpaper smoother, working from the middle of the panel outwards. If needed, gently pull the panel off the wall to realign and firmly smooth back down into place.
- Tip: Do not overwork the panels as this could scratch or stretch the wallpaper.
- Tip: Spray or wallpaper adhesive may be used to reinforce corners and seams.
5. Match and butt the second panel (Panel 2) to the edge of the first panel and smooth out firmly. Ensure panels have a tight fit (no gaps between seams) and are free from air bubbles.
- Tip: With all directional patterns, it is important to line up patterns at eye level, allowing any drift in lineup to run off towards ceiling and floor. The standard allowance is 1/4" up or down. If the pattern is lined up at the ceiling, the pattern will begin misalignment sooner and the gap will be larger. Most patterns will be viewed at eye level, therefore it is that area that needs to look aligned.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 until all panels in a set are installed before beginning a new set. When finished hanging your wallpaper, use a fresh, straight-edge blade and ruler to trim the top and bottom of each panel to remove excess wallpaper.
MAINTENANCE
Dust with a dry cloth. For light cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth with warm water. Avoid harsh cleaners, scrubbing, or solvents. Do not saturate seams. Clean the walls from the top down, using vertical motions. Pat gently with a clean, soft cloth or bath towel to remove any surface moisture.
REMOVAL
To remove, start at a top corner and slowly peel downward at a 180° angle. If resistance occurs, gently warm with a hair dryer to soften adhesive. Removal performance depends on wall condition and preparation.
